Planning a Low Stress Summer: Tips for Working Parents

The summer break is often one that your children will be counting down to by the day (if you haven’t already broken up!) but for working parents, it can bring on a mix of excitement and anxiety. How do you keep your children engaged, safe, and happy while juggling your work responsibilities? The key is planning ahead and finding the right support.

Here are some tips to help our working parents navigate the summer months with less stress and more balance.

1. Map Out Your Summer Early
Start by reviewing school calendars, planning your holiday days, and any major family plans. Once you have the “non-negotiables” on the calendar, you can identify childcare gaps and look for options that fit your family’s needs and schedule.

2. Embrace a Flexible Routine
Kids thrive on routine, but that doesn’t mean every day has to be rigid. Create a general summer schedule that includes time for play, learning and rest that happens on home days so that you can block plan in when you might be able to get some work done. A flexible structure helps children feel secure while giving you some predictability to manage your workday.

3. Explore Summer Camp Opportunities
Look for local clubs or camps that offer fun, hands-on learning experiences…bonus points if they align with your child’s interests. Activities like art, sports, and nature exploration keep kids engaged and help reduce screen time. Whilst we know that working parents will often try and save on childcare, sometimes a day apart where you can crack on with your “to do” list is exactly what is needed for everyone.

4. Lean on Support Systems
Whether it’s family, neighbors, or fellow parents, sharing the load can make summer smoother. Coordinate playdates or swap half-day childcare with another working parent to give each other a break. You will be surprised at just how many parents are up for this when you reach out and ask, the challenge comes in feeling brave enough to ask in the first place.

5. Use Tech to Stay Organized
As a tech start up, we can’t not mention the added bonus of having an organised online calendar that both parents can access. You can colour code for each family member and put your holiday childcare in, including drop off times and pick up’s. Sharing the holiday load is never easy, but can take the pressure off for it all falling just to one parent.
