Sports days & sun cream: Surviving the summer term

As quickly as we are prepping our childcare plans for half term, it is back to school in no time at all. Yellow Days caught up with parenting expert Heidi Skudder as she shares her best tips on getting through the busy summer term run-in without dropping too many balls…

Up your Calendar Game

Now is the time to start syncing what you can so that everything shows up in one place. A shared calendar if you are in a household with two parents is a great idea, ideally electronic so updates can be made quickly and easily when school emails come in. Some AI software will now even do this for you. Have a rule that whoever opens the email, adds to the calendar straight away.

Stock up on summer basics

More summer PE kit? Suncream with name labels on? At least two hats because one will definitely end up in lost property. Now is a good time to make sure that you have everything prepped and ready for the summer term. Start incorporating putting on sun scream as part of your child’s morning routine – whilst it is something extra to remember, it means they don’t have to worry at school and you have peace of mind on those hotter summer sun days.

Ditch the guilt

The summer term is full to the brim of events and you may not be able to attend every single one. Talk to your child about which ones they value the most. It is ok not to show up to everything. Simply explain in advance to your child that you might not be able to make it and this can open up interesting discussions about your work too and what is important to you. Even if your child feels disappointed, this can build resilience once you have held space for their feelings.

Book ahead for the summer holidays
